Cone beam CT, X-rays and safety of dental care The WDA and the American Dental Association work hard every day to ensure new oral health technologies are used effectively and efficiently. Our goal is to protect public safety, promote best practices and provide the top-quality, safe and effective dental care the American public deserves. FDA warns Invisalign maker to report serious side effects The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning to Align Technology, maker of the popular teeth straightener Invisalign, to comply with federal requirements to report serious side effects associated with medical devices. Dental amalgam is safe, effective A new report from the World Health Organization reinforces dental amalgam as a safe and effective restorative material and also notes the widespread public health impact of any proposed ban of the material. Facial pain and jaw implants The Food and Drug Administration has announced it is reviewing jaw implant devices after reports of numerous problems. Click to read the article and for more information about facial pain. Dental patient FAQs View answers to dental patients' frequently asked questions, including information about who owns dental records, frequency of exams and X-rays, treatment costs, teeth whitening and more. Fluoride & community water fluoridation The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced that it will revise the recommended levels for optimally fluoridating community water systems. Historically, the recommended optimal level for community water fluoridation has been 0.7 to 1.2 parts per million. The new recommended level is 0.7 ppm. Hyland’s Teething Tablets recalled due to children’s health risk The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced Oct. 23, 2010 that Hyland’s Teething Tablets are being recalled because they may pose a risk to children. Many parents give this product to children to reduce teeth-related pain. AIDS dental clinics making a difference The state of Wisconsin has identified finding accessible, affordable dental care as one of the top two challenges for people living with HIV/AIDS. Read how WDA member dentists are helping people living with HIV/AIDS. Lead contamination & dental restorations Recent news headlines indicate traces of lead have been found in some dental restorations, such as crowns and bridges. Both the CDC and FDA have weighed in on this issue, stating the traces of lead are "extremely unlikely to cause adverse health effects". Bisphenol A and dental sealants Recent state and national news reports have indicated the potential danger Bisphenol A (BPA) can have on human development and reproduction. Based on current research the American Dental Association and authoritative government agencies agree that the low-level of BPA exposure that may result from dental sealants and composites poses no known health threat. How to choose a dentist Finding the right dentist may be just as important as choosing a new neighborhood to live in or finding a new school. To find the right dentist for you, the WDA suggests getting recommendations from people you know, such as friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, or even your previous dentist. Brushing & flossing basics Learn how to brush and floss your teeth properly. Changing your toothbrush The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush at least every three to four months. Health histories Never underestimate the importance of a health history. Because oral health is closely linked to overall health, dentists are better able to serve those patients who fully disclose their health histories. Teeth whitening Teeth whitening is a booming, billion-dollar industry and whitening kiosks are popping up in malls across the country. But would you trust someone who’s not a licensed dentist to perform this procedure in your mouth? Fighting tobacco dependence Wisconsin dentists are on the front lines when it comes to helping people stop smoking and chewing tobacco. Tobacco is a major risk factor for oral cancer. Learn how your dentist can help you quit. |
