WDA Smile Contest

For the past 23 years, newborns to 16-year-olds, displayed their pearly whites at the Wisconsin Dental Association’s Smile Contest at the state fair.

The WDA and state fair co-sponsored this annual contest that became a tradition for many families.

However, the WDA Board of Trustees has decided to discontinue the event due to limited staff and financial resources.

The first WDA Smile Contest, held on Aug. 12, 1988 at the fair, welcomed nearly 200 participants. It was co-sponsored by the WDA and Auxiliary/Alliance of the WDA, a group of dentists’ spouses who supported the profession through educational and political efforts until disbanding in 2001.

The WDA Foundation graciously helped provide financial support for this family-fun event over the years.

First, second and third place prizes were awarded in seven age categories and a special “tin grin” competition for youngsters with braces.

Although the Smile Contest has been discontinued, the WDA is exploring ways to continue promoting important family oral health message with the fun of a contest through the WDA “Baby Teeth Matter” public awareness campaign. Like us on Facebook and stay tuned for details.

Thank you to past participants for showing your smiles for 23 years!
