Gum disease and diabetes
November is Diabetes Awareness Month
Severe periodontal (gum) disease often leads to tooth loss, but recent scientific research suggests a link to a variety of universal health conditions, including diabetes.
The gum disease – diabetes connection is a two-way street. Periodontal disease makes it difficult for people with diabetes to control their blood sugar, thus increasing the need for insulin and risk for complications.
Diabetes can also make people three to four times more likely to develop chronic periodontal infections.
If you have diabetes, be sure to tell your dentist. People who have both diabetes and periodontal disease should be treated to eliminate the periodontal infection.
Help keep your gums and body healthy by practicing good oral hygiene habits. This includes daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to the dentist for examinations and X-rays. MORE>>
Saluting military dentists
In recognition of Veteran’s Day, the Wisconsin Dental Association salutes its nearly 500 member dentists who have used their skills and talents to serve their country and support their profession through military service.
One
of those veterans is Dr. Zachary Graf, now a general dentist in Green
Bay, Wis., who enlisted in the Navy after dental school. Besides the
tangible benefits he gained from serving in the military (i.e.,
consistently working with patients to hone his dental skills, having
dental school and books paid for), it gave him a sense of pride.
“You can’t put a price tag on the personal pride you feel from serving your country,” Dr. Graf said.
Oral
health is integrally linked to overall health; it is necessary to
ensure the oral health of our country’s servicemen and women to
maintain overall troop readiness. Yet, keeping the U.S. military
branches fully staffed remains an ongoing challenge. MORE>>
