The lecture segment of this presentation will concentrate
on two areas - how to perform Endodontics in a predictable, reproducible
manner, and how to do root canal therapy in such a manner that you actually
enhance the long-term prognosis of the tooth.
The goal of this program is to have dentists learn how to perform endodontics
in such a way that they can offer their patients a long-term natural dentition
option as an alternative to implants.
Included in the lecture component will be a thorough
discussion concerning access, non-surgical ultrasonic use, rotary file design,
instrumentation techniques, and various obturation options.
Particular emphasis will be placed on developing
endodontic synchronicity between a machined preparation and a laser verified
primary or single cone. Additionally, various techniques will be discussed that
will facilitate the restoration of the endodontically treated tooth.
Participants will have the opportunity to validate all these concepts during
the hands-on session.
During this lecture participants will learn:
-
How to
create straight-line access that will expedite the endodontic process.
- The
multiple benefits of piezo electric ultrasonics.
- Which
ultrasonic tips are ideal for endodontic application.
- The
difference between landed and non-landed rotary files.
- How to
"machine" or "mill" an endodontic preparation.
- The
benefits of developing "endodontic synchronicity" between a machined
preparation and a cone.
- The
multiple advantages of performing a constant .04 taper preparation.
- A new
adhesion based obturation technique.
- How best to
restore an endodontically treated tooth.
- Most
importantly of all, how to perform endodontics in such a manner that you do not
compromise the long-term retention of the tooth. In fact, learn how to do
endodontics so that you actually enhance the long-term retention of the tooth.

Radiography for Dental Auxiliaries is a two part CE
course consisting of an on-line didactic portion and a hands-on section. Those wishing to take the hands-on portion
during the Jewel of the Great Lakes MUST successfully complete the online
didactic portion in advance of the meeting.
The on-line portion, available March 2008, will cover the
following sections:
- Bisecting angle and paralleling techniques
- Prevention and correction of radiographic errors
At the end of each section an on-line assessment will be
given to evaluate participants’ knowledge.
The hands-on section will be completed at Marquette
University School of Dentistry during the Jewel of the Great Lakes. Working
with a manikin, participants will practice making a full mouth radiograph
series using digital sensors and phosphor plates*. The radiographic images will
be evaluated for positioning technique and errors.
Upon successful completion of both sections of the
course, a certificate of completion will be awarded.
*As the school is now completely digital, auxiliaries who
use film will work with phosphor plates that look and feel like film. Phosphor
plates require digital “processing” prior to visualization of the final image.
Errors which may occur in traditional wet processing will be covered in the
on-line didactic portion.
This course is offered in partnership with Marquette
University School of Dentistry.

In 2007, the WDA embarked on a multi-year, multi-audience
educational awareness campaign based on American Dental Association and
American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry policies aimed at securing a dental
home for every child in Wisconsin by the age of one.
Currently in phase one, the WDA is working to provide
member dentists and their dental teams with the clinical information and
practice tools necessary to empower them in making a general practice into an
efficient and welcoming dental home for children as young as 12-months-old.
This one-hour class will reinforce the early childhood
exam techniques featured in the instructional DVD and supporting print material
to be sent to practicing WDA dentists early in 2008. WDA pediatric dentists
will work with program attendees on perfecting the knee-to-knee exam technique.
They’ll also be available to answer questions about caries risk assessment,
anticipatory guidance, treatment and referral guidelines.

A routinely followed format for the post trauma
examination provides a more organized approach along with the assurance of a
thorough evaluation. Other areas of
injury to the head or oral cavity may be missed if we concentrate only on the
most obvious injury or chief complaint.
This lecture instructs participants in examination, diagnosis and the
treatment of oral trauma in the pediatric patient. Timing and inclusions for follow-up
examination, radiographic techniques and antibiotic recommendations are included. Many accidents lead to legal intervention,
and findings that appear to be irrelevant or minor may ultimately be of
significance. The thoroughness and
organization of your dental records will not only insure excellence in the care
of your patients, but may prove to be invaluable for medico-legal support.

Because of its abysmal statistics, early cancer detection
is Patti DiGangi’s crusade.
Historically, the greatest strides in combating most cancers have come
from increased awareness and aggressive campaigns directed at early
detection. Companies are bringing new
diagnostic devises to the market; organizations like the Oral Cancer Foundation
are pushing for public literacy and awareness.
Dentistry has a unique opportunity “To catch the wave of momentum and
turn it into a positive force, reversing decades of past neglect.”
In this course, you’ll learn how to:
- Identify
how health profiles act as first key to identifying those clients at risk for
oral cancer
- Describe
the clinical characteristics of oral cancer
- Define the
steps of the manual oral cancer screening
- Differentiate
adjunctive early detection modalities
- Practice
techniques using chemiluminescence and brush biopsy
- Discuss
strategies for incorporating early oral cancer screening into daily practice

The advent of direct composite bonding, tooth bleaching
and enhanced all¬ ceramics has greatly affected the approaches used in the
diagnosis, planning and case design for treating today's compromised smiles.
Despite inherent challenges with identifying the clinical protocol that
preserve natural dentition and achieve patient objectives, our goal as
clinicians can now realistically be to provide minimal treatment first, so only
compromised dentition are affected. Such conservative treatment requires us to
work in close collaboration with ceramists, demonstrate greater attention to
shape, form and color matching, and practice the listening and communication
skills necessary to translate patient expectations into the desired results. To
achieve esthetic success and functional longevity ¬while simultaneously
realizing an elevated level of professional satisfaction and skill, we must
also maintain a working knowledge and plan for occlusal stability, conservative
tooth reduction, exact provisionals, state-of-the-art direct and ceramic
materials, and perfect biologic acceptance.
During this lecture, Dr. Thomas Trinkner will provide
suggestions for the use of mock-ups, tools for communicating with ceramists,
and other components necessary to develop more conservative approaches that
will help ensure your success in solving esthetic dilemmas in the least
invasive-but most creatively challenging ¬manner possible. Specific case
studies will also be discussed.

Courtesy makes a strong comeback! As society becomes more demanding,
fine-tuning courtesy toward patients can make a significant difference in
patient retention, treatment acceptance and your likelihood of earning
referrals. Taught by a certified trainer
of Professional Protocol, participants will learn what the most demanding and
discerning patients perceive as the keys to courteous behavior. You will learn how to implement these
behaviors in the practice.
If your patients seem to be more critical, if you have an
aging patient base, if you are finding it more challenging to keep your most
valued patients in your practice or if you have new hires or a jaded team, it
may be time to reevaluate your team approach to courtesy. You'll leave this session with specific tips
on ensuring that patients view your office as special.
Content will include:
- The real
meaning of "Common Courtesy"
- The top
"Do's and Taboos" of courtesy from the patient's point of view
- Practical
application of courtesy in the dental practice
- Role-playing:
practice makes perfect
- The
importance of sincerity and genuineness in communication
- Courtesy
toward teammates
- Courtesy in
collegial relationships with other practices

With implant dentistry becoming mainstream in daily
dental practice, it is imperative for the general dentist to rationalize dental
implants as a treatment option, successfully treatment plan implant cases and
understand the science of implant surgery and prosthetics.
Several factors have combined to impact the increasing
need and use of implants including an aging population and tooth loss related
to age, the psychological aspects of
tooth loss, poor results with conventional removable prostheses,
predictable long term results of implant supported prostheses and maintenance
of alveolar bone.
Judicious selection of which implant cases to treat will
provide the clinician with the ability to expand the use of implants in their
practice. Contemporary concepts and
techniques will be examined in the context of incorporating predictable implant
therapy into a general practice.
Upon completion of this course, participants will have
the knowledge to:
- evaluate
patients for implant therapy
- understand
osseointegration and bone quality
- select
proper implant location
- choose
appropriate surgical instrumentation for oral implantology
- understand
surgical placement techniques and principles

Dentistry is at a crossroads in the 21st century.
Dentists are desperately trying to integrate new concepts of esthetics into
practice during a time when the basic concepts of occlusion are supported by
some and attacked by others. Treatment positions from a Pankey-Dawson
perspective seem in polar opposition to a myocentric philosophy. What concepts
should a practicing dentist follow?
This course covers the most important occlusal concepts
of the 21st century and will revolutionize the way that you practice. Joint Based Occlusion is the future of dentistry,
and you can learn more about it in this program!
Learning Objectives
- Historical
concepts of occlusion dating back to the 19th and 20th centuries Development of
Joint Based Occlusion from MRI scanning technology, defining joint space and
occlusal dimensions from normal anatomy
- Alteration
of joint space dimensions from disk and retrodiskal breakdown Piper's
Classification of Disk Displacement
- Alteration
of joint space dimensions from abnormal mandibular condyles
- Piper's
classification of Condylar disorders
- Angle's and
Dawson's classifications of occlusion
- Piper's
Joint Based Occlusion Classification
- Bimanual
manipulation and temporomandibular diagnosis

Treating children today requires a new approach for
behavioral guidance. Children are being
raised with little discipline and few limitations. Aversive techniques are no
longer acceptable and parents often intervene, directing our treatment. This lecture discusses management techniques
for both our patients and their families. Potential problems are identified with specific recommendations that can
result in more successful and less stressful visits.
This program is recommended by the WDA Dental Home
Initiative Subcommittee.

University School of Dentistry during the Jewel of the Great
Lakes. Working with a manikin, participants will practice making a
full mouth radiograph series using digital sensors and phosphor plates*. The
radiographic images will be evaluated for positioning technique and errors.

Tools & Techniques for Dental Home Construction - Dental Home Initiative Task Force
Friday, May 2 7 - 8 a.m.
CEUs
Free
In 2007, the WDA embarked on a multi-year, multi-audience
educational awareness campaign based on American Dental Association and American Academy
of Pediatric Dentistry policies and aimed at securing a dental home for every
child in Wisconsin
by the age of one.
WDA pediatric dentists
will work with program attendees on perfecting knee-to-knee exam technique.
They’ll also be available to answer questions about caries risk assessment,
anticipatory guidance, treatment and referral guidelines.
This program is offered and sponsored by the WDA Dental
Home Initiative Subcommittee and includes a continental breakfast. (Sorry, a complimentary lunch ticket is NOT
included with this course.)

An Update on Bisphosphonate-Related Osteonecrosis of the
Jaw - Ma’ Lou Sabino, DDS, MS
Friday, May 2 7 - 8 a.m.
CEUs 1
Free
The initial report of Bisphosphonate-Related
Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ) in 2003 has brought to light a problem that
has crossed many disciplines. Since
then, the numbers of cases has risen and is expected to continue to rise as
people become aware of this entity.
Recommendations are many, but because of the lack of well-controlled
studies, there remains no treatment.
The focus of this discussion would be on a review of the
current literature, the recommendations that exist, and the future prospects
for studies that will hopefully help us treat our patients who suffer from this
debilitating disease.
This program is offered and sponsored by the Wisconsin
Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and includes a continental breakfast. (Sorry, a complimentary lunch ticket is NOT
included with this course.)
