Volunteers

WDA Foundation Mission of Mercy

  • Dental professionals click here to register (includes dentists, hygienists, assistants and lab technicians)
    Note all dental hygiene volunteer slots have been filled. However, we encourage dental hygienists who are interested in volunteering to sign up in another area.
All dentists and hygienists volunteering must have a current Wisconsin license. If you are volunteering and hold a license from another state, you may obtain a temporary no-fee charity permit through the Wisconsin Department of Regulation and Licensing.

In all, 950 volunteers will be needed to make this year’s event happen. Whether you are a caring dental professional or just a caring individual, there are numerous opportunities for you to volunteer at the WDA Mission of Mercy (MOM).  Please note, all volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.  Anyone involved directly with patient care must have their heptavax shots completed. MOM is divided into several departments with each department needing various types of volunteers. 

The general departments are: 

  • Patient Registration
  • Medical Triage
  • Dental Triage
  • Patient Routing
  • Anesthetic
  • Restorative
  • Endodontic
  • Pediatric
  • Prosthodontic/Dental Lab
  • Oral Surgery
  • Hygiene
  • Hygiene Education
  • Post-Op
  • Sterilization
  • Pharmacy
  • Patient Exit Interview
  • Data Entry
  • EMT
  • Security
  • Food Service
  • Facilities/Maintenance
  • Set-up (tables, chairs, dental units, supplies, signs, volunteer registration, food service, etc)
  • Tear-down (disassemble equipment, pack equipment and supplies, inventory, general clean-up, etc)
Volunteers fall into two general categories: dental/medical professionals and lay volunteers. Within each category several volunteer types are needed. Please see the below to identify areas where you can be of assistance.

Dental/medical professionals

The following professionals are needed:

  • Dentists: Those with a dental degree are needed to work in the following departments: dental triage, local anesthetic, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatrics
  • Hygienists: Those with a dental hygiene degree are needed to work in the following areas: hygiene, hygiene education
  • Dental Assistants: Those working in a dental office or dental clinic are needed in the following areas:  dental triage, oral surgery, restorative, endodontics, prosthodontics, pediatrics, sterilization.
  • X-Ray Technicians: Panoramic and nomad x-ray machines will be utilized
  • Lab Technicians: treatment partials will be made
  • Dental Equipment Maintenance: experienced dental equipment technicians
  • LPNs, RNs, Nursing Students, Physicians, Physician Assistants: Those who are qualified to conduct a medical history and check blood pressure and blood glucose levels
  • EMTs: Emergency Medical Technicians will be needed on hand during treatment hours
  • Pharmacists/Pharmacy Techs: Pre-medication, antibiotics and low-level pain medications will be prescribed

Lay volunteers

General volunteers are needed to fill these positions:

  • Patient Registration: greet and explain how the program works; direct people where they need to go to make sure they are seen in first come, first served order; distribute paperwork; hall monitors.
  • Patient Escorts: escort patients between various departments ensuring that no one is ever left alone on the clinic floor
  • Patient-Exit Interviewers: assist patients in completing exit interview
  • Runners: assist department heads as needed
  • Translators: Spanish and Hmong translators will be needed in all departments
  • Volunteer Registration: greet and check in volunteers
  • Food Service: serve and clean-up food service areas for patients and/or volunteers
  • Waste Management: empty waste, general clean-up
  • Crowd Control: ensure orderliness of everyone at the event
  • Willing Hands: anyone physically able to help set-up and tear-down/pack-up the event
