Annual CE & Networking Event

NEW CE BAKER

Overview

The Wisconsin Dental Association is teaming up with Greater Dane Dental Society to present "Miracles & Mayhem: Essentials for the Dental Team."  We are excited to welcome Professor Karen Baker, Associate Professor, College of Dentistry University of Iowa as she curates a day of learning suited for dentists and their dental teams on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023 at the Madison Marriott West in Middleton.

Lecture Synopsis

Infectious disease threats along with economic and social upheaval present unique challenges to dental practice. We will focus on new infectious diseases including viruses, superbugs, and the future of new antibiotic development. Many patients want to know about immune support supplements or therapies so we will talk about the myths and realities of these treatments. Antibiotic stewardship is more important than ever so we will outline evidence-based strategies for antibiotic prescribing. When is prophylactic antibiotic use warranted and how can we assess risk vs benefit? Meanwhile, the opioid epidemic touches every American and dental prescribing practices have rapidly evolved. We will examine current and future innovative drug combinations which can reduce risks to patients and to your practice. Finally, drug interaction risks increase as the patient medication list gets longer. Extensive handouts will allow clinicians to apply lecture information to chairside practice in order to meet the complex challenges of modern dental pharmacotherapy.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this lecture, attendees should be able to:

  •  Identify misleading and dangerous misinformation about antiviral treatments,
  •  List three proven strategies for strengthening immune health,
  •  List five steps in appropriate antibiotic prescribing in dental practice,
  •  Discuss the AAOS and AHA antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines,
  •  Prescribe opioid-sparing analgesia regimens with confidence, and
  •  Modify dental drug therapy in order to avoid potentially dangerous drug interactions.
